The Bothy · A reflective community
A place to come together,
reflect, and find your way forward
Each week we gather, guided by the season and the stars, to journal, reflect, and carry what we find back into the week ahead.

What is The Bothy?
Not a course. Not a programme.
A community gathering.
A bothy is a small stone shelter in the Scottish wilderness, a place where walkers rest, warm themselves by the fire, and step back out into the landscape renewed. No agenda. No performance. Just warmth and shared company before continuing the journey.
This Bothy works the same way. We meet each week as a community not to be taught at, but to reflect together. The astrology of the moment and the turning of the season give us our theme. The journalling gives us the space. And the group gives us the mirror.
What you bring each week shapes how you move through the week. That's the whole point.
"The world outside will always confirm what you're already looking for. The Bothy is where you decide what that is."
How it works
Guided by the stars. Grounded in your life.
Each week's gathering is shaped by what the sky is doing - the sun's sign, the moon's phase, planetary transits and seasonal thresholds. These aren't abstract concepts: they're a lens. A way of noticing what is already moving in your life, and choosing consciously what to look for next.
01 We gather Each week the community comes together live, or you catch the replay in your own time. No fixed day or time, life is allowed to happen. There is always a mix of early evening and lunch time sessions through the month, for the different working patterns and life patterns people are in.
02 We tune in The season and astrology offer a theme - a current to pay attention to. We sit with it together before we start to write.
03 We journal Prompted, unhurried reflection. No right answers. Just your own noticing, on the page, in good company.
04 We carry it forward You leave with something - an intention, a question, a shift in what you're paying attention to. Something to take into the week.
Why it works
Why journalling in community
is one of the most powerful things you can do.
This isn't just ancient wisdom, it's some of the most compelling research in modern neuroscience and psychology. Over three decades of peer-reviewed studies have now established that regular prompted reflection changes the brain, the body, and the quality of your attention.
The Bothy is built directly on this evidence. Here's what's actually happening when you show up each week.
01 Writing retrains what your brain pays attention to
Your brain's Reticular Activating System (RAS) acts as a gatekeeper, filtering the 11 million bits of information you receive every second down to the roughly 40 your conscious mind can hold. It decides what's relevant based on what you've repeatedly focused on. When you write something down, you signal to your RAS: this matters. That signal recalibrates the filter, and within days, you begin to notice more of what you've named, and less of what you haven't.

02 It quiets the threat response and restores calm
Neuroimaging studies at UCLA found that expressive writing activates the prefrontal cortex, your brain's executive and reasoning centre, while simultaneously dampening activity in the amygdala, the threat-detection system. In plain terms: the act of writing moves you from reaction to reflection. Studies also show that regular journalling can reduce cortisol (the primary stress hormone) by up to 23% in consistent practitioners.

03 It physically changes how your brain is wired
Regular reflective writing promotes neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to form new neural pathways. This means the habit of reflection literally rewires your brain for better emotional regulation and stress management over time. You're not just having insights. You're building a brain that has them more naturally, and handles difficulty with greater steadiness.

04 Community amplifies every effect
Research consistently shows that reflective practices held in relational settings produce deeper and more lasting change than solo practice. Witnessing others' reflections activates mirror neuron systems and provides the external perspective that solo journalling can't. Co-regulation, the biological calming that happens in safe community, also primes the nervous system to be more open and receptive before we even pick up the pen.
Social Neuroscience
05 The effects extend far beyond your mental state
Researcher Karen Baikie's landmark review found that people who journalled for just 20 minutes across three to five sessions made 47% fewer stress-related visits to their doctor. Immune function improved. Blood pressure dropped. These aren't soft outcomes, they reflect what happens when the chronic stress response that drains the body is interrupted, regularly, by the practice of meaning-making.

06 Seasonal and cyclical rhythm deepens the work
Returning to reflection with a consistent outer rhythm, season, moon, the turning of the year, gives the brain a predictable scaffold. Predictability reduces baseline stress, and the thematic anchoring of each session means reflections build on one another over time, rather than remaining isolated insights. This is what transforms journalling from a wellbeing habit into genuine long-term change.

The Bothy is not a science class, we'll never sit and study any of this. But it is built in full awareness of it. Every element of how we gather, what we reflect on, and how we structure the week has been designed to put these mechanisms to work in the most natural, human way possible.
You don't need to understand the neuroscience for it to work. You just need to show up.
Who it’s for
You, if you're a deep thinker and feeler
who learns best by reflecting.
The Bothy is for you if you already know that insight matters but you want somewhere to actually do the work, weekly, with others alongside you. If you're someone who reads widely, thinks deeply, and often has revelations in the bath, but loses them before they reach the rest of your life.
This is the practice that catches and captures them.
It may not be for you if you're looking for a structured course, a step-by-step programme, or quick results. The Bothy works in seasons, not sprints.
If you’re looking for more structured alignment support, then the Soul Map is for you.

A note before you join. This is not a space to keep up with. There are no gold stars for perfect attendance… sessions are always recorded, and the right ones will find you when you're ready. Come when you can. Catch replays when life gets in the way. Some months you'll be fully present; others you'll be quiet. Both are welcome.
If you're already forming a list of ways you might fail at this before you've joined, that's worth noticing. And it's exactly the kind of thing we work with inside.

Becky, your Host inside The Bothy
I hold the Bothy as I would a real shelter: with warmth, steadiness, and deep respect for your timing. I'm an astrologer, Human Design guide, and holistic health researcher, and I've been doing this work since 2019. We use the stars and seasons not to escape real life, but to live it more intentionally. You don't need to arrive ready. You just need to be willing to show up.
